The Land Between Two Rivers
The ancient civilization of Mesopotamia, which was located in present-day Iraq, lies between two rivers - the Tigris and the Euphrates. The rivers influenced the community because the ancient society depended on the two rivers to survive. These rivers provided the citizens of Mesopotamia with water, and fresh resources, such as fish. Also, the river provided the land with fertile soil for farming. The geography affected the people because of the different areas and the climate. Places like Northern Mesopotamia had fertile soil which was used for farming. This fertile soil is due to the river and the yearly rain. Settlers in northern Mesopotamia were farmers, and used timer, metal and stone from nearby mountains. Southern Mesopotamia was mostly marshy areas with wide flat plains. The settlers were forced to irrigate the land to get water from the river to grow crops.
